Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kenpo Karate?
Kenpo Karate was developed in the 1940’s by Mr Edmund K Parker, Founding Grand Master of the Art. Kenpo is a “stand-up” Art, within which you see elements of Japanese (strong linear movements) and Chinese (flowing circular movements) striking Martial Arts, along with “body control” concepts, as seen in Jiu Jitsu styles.
Kenpo Karate is a highly practical Martial Art, and through your training, you will learn how to block, kick and strike. Physically, you will develop environmental awareness, structural stability, balance, coordination, flow, speed, power and timing as you progress through our step by step curriculum.
What are the rankings in Kenpo Karate?
There are 10 belt ranks in Kenpo Karate, everyone starts as a white belt, and you then progress through – yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown belts and finally your 1st degree Black belt!
Although receiving your Black belt is a significant achievement, it is not really the end. Have you just ticked a “life-goal” box or is it the start of a life-long journey in the Martial Arts… what comes next is up to you!
What makes Kenpo Karate different from other martial arts?
In Kenpo Karate, you will learn how to use your body - the tools you have to work with to protect yourself and your family. Your training is broken into:
BASICS – learn how to kick/punch/block (and more!) correctly
SETS/FORMS – patterns of movement to teach the “big ideas” of the Art
TECHNIQUES – examples of how to use the basics you have learned in practical self-defence scenarios
SPARRING – Testing yourself in action against a fellow student
Do I need to be strong, flexible and in shape to join Karate?
No, to get started in our classes you just need a willingness to turn up, to learn and to have fun! If you stick with your training over time, you will notice both your fitness and flexibility improving.
How often should I attend a class a week?
See our class timetable here.
This is really up to the individual – more is obviously better, however, we understand that Karate has to fit around the rest of your life. Starting training once a week – you will still see yourself improve more than if you never start training in the first place.
How large are the classes?
All of our classes (kids and adults) are limited to 20 students. We typically have 4-5 instructors in each session, allowing us to work with students in small groups.
What happens if I miss a class?
We understand life gets in the way sometimes - you are welcome to make up any missed classes at one of our other sessions in the week.
What is the age requirement for each program?
Kids Karate – Junior kids classes 4-5 y/o, Kids classes 6-12 y/o
Teens/Adults Karate – 13 and up
What do you wear to train and where can I get them?
We wear a black uniform (Gi) at our classes, and students receive a FREE uniform when they first join. The gi’s we use are great quality and will last for years, your child will literally outgrow their uniform before they wear it out!
Is it ok to attend a class as a visitor?
People are welcome to come to view our classes, however, we strongly recommend potential students join in for our trial classes and get up on the mats to have a go.
